Many of you might have seen him around Hong Kong or maybe in this particular restaurant in Yuen Long; but I wonder how many of you really know him or have really noticed the walls in his restaurant and have been curious to know more about him. Well then & now, he still carries that cheerful smile and runs his famous restaurant Sek Kong Gaa Lei Nguk 石崗咖喱屋 or Shaffi's Restaurant in Yuen Long. But he is not Shaffi. He is... Meet Mr. Liaqat Ali!
And the name of the restaurant actually is the name of Mr. Ali's uncle who was also a soldier before but after his retirement founded the restaurant in 1972, and served curries to the British military within Shek Kong army camp. Mr. Ali joined his uncle as his assistant in 1985 when he was 21 years old. After the demise of his uncle, he was responsible not only for that one restaurant but he also expanded to Stonecutters island (昂船洲), Osborn Barracks (奧士本軍營) and Victoria Barracks (域多利兵房). Moreover he also trained & still trains local people who are interested to cook Indian food. Since then he has lots of happy memories cooking for the British force (including Gurkhas), their family and friends as well as locals here in Hong Kong. You can visit his restaurant to learn not only about the history of Hong Kong but also taste yummy Indian food.
